What the black streaks are
The dark streaks common on Houston roofs are a type of algae that feeds on shingles and thrives in heat and humidity. Besides looking bad, it can shorten the life of a roof if it's left to spread.
Why we never pressure wash shingles
Roofing manufacturers advise against high-pressure washing on asphalt shingles because it can strip the protective granules. We soft wash instead: a cleaning solution applied at low pressure, left to work, then rinsed. Plants around the house are rinsed before and after.
